Sui Generis Soaker

I must say that in many years of watching the bath scene, I've not come across a design quite like the Pfeiffer. A lumpy block of raw marble on the outside, the inside of the tub is smooth. I think the Rockwell tub would be best at home in a kids' bath—but with its exaggerated forms and punchy palette, it would also be well suited to a PoMo- or Memphis-inspired interior. A Brassy Bath

At once polished and proletarian, this bath has a quality of refuge about it. The combination of humble plaster walls and gleaming brass—albeit with a hint of tarnish—is grounding, at least for me. Part lounge, part tub, this design is lulling me into a restful state just by looking at it. It's a 'statement' bathtub, sure, but its low profile and controlled lines speak quietly. That's a trait I'd like to see more of in fixture design. ustogether.eu

In their quest to create union of opposites—a tub with a small footprint and a spacious interior—Neri & Hu worked on the design of the Immersion bath for more than three years. Water- and sun-resistant textiles for outdoor use have reached a performance pinnacle—so why not capitalize on that and bring them into the bath? Let's start 2016 with an open mind, shall we? In the spirit of the new year, I'm going to focus on product concepts this week.

Designed by Carina Deuschl, the Xtend bathtub is both space-saving and portable. A collapsible carbon-fiber frame supports a padded textile liner. Fascinating Facets

In architecture and in fashion, the geometry du jour is the faceted form. Arik Levy brings that to the bath with his Emerso collection of sinks and tubs. I see it as a welcome alternative to the endless egg-like soakers that have saturated [ahem] the market over the past few years. kaldewei.com

On sultry days where humidity and heat conspire to keep one in a state of perpetual stickiness, this expedient design could offer some relief. Yesterday's sudden [and much welcomed] downpour might have filled the Lariana tub to its chiseled rim. I think Patricia Urquiola's take on the traditional footed bath—substituting a solid plinth for individual feet—gives the fixture a quietly architectural character. agapedesign.it

Kelly Hoppen may cite origami as the inspiration for this bath collection, but I beg to differ. It's obviously something far less arty: Cupcakes! Aesthetic Equilibrium

The prominent X-bracing on these bath fixtures reminds me of campaign furniture—the portable chairs, desks, and tables used in 19th century military encampments often featured folding stands or legs. This design, by Norm Architects of Copenhagen, is much more expressive than their clunky historic counterparts; the balance of the vessels on their bases is solid, yet delicate. ex-t.com

Flight of Fancy

Designed by Paolo Funghi, the JR. bathroom suite is not only scaled for a youngster, it's attuned to a child's sense of fantasy and wonder. Drifting Away

The winter-weather prognosticators are at it again—only this time, I'm inclined to believe their warnings about frigid conditions. Even though we're surrounded by an icy, wind-sculpted environment that all-too resembles the design of this bathtub, I would happily fill it with hot water for a long, thawing soak. There's a bit of cold irony in Caroline Beaupere's fixture design, though. It's inspired not by drifting snow, but by the desert dunes of the Siwa Oasis in Egypt. clarkearchitectural.com

Say It Ain't Snow, Day 3

British artists Zoe Walker and Neil Bromwich created this inflatable iceberg/hot tub to explore the relationship between art and physical and psychological well-being.
